Tax Resources

All Federal and NYS tax forms are now available at our Information Desk.

Tax help is available through the 2012 AARP tax assistance program. Note that this is NOT a library-run program. Appointments are available in 2 locations (and are required):
  • Mondays at Colonie Town Hall 534 Loudon Road, Latham
  • Wednesdays at Colonie Community Center 1653 Central Ave, Colonie

Call Town of Colonie Senior Resources Dept. at 459-3977 to make an appointment.
The library has reproducible forms from five years back for both Federal and State income tax. Please ask at the information desk for these items.

The library also has the following print resources available to those seeking tax information.

CCH Federal Tax Guide This is a two volume loose leaf service from the Commerce Clearing House. The guide states that it “has been planned for everyday reference in dealing with the corporate and individual tax questions that affect business and personal affairs.” Close to 15,000 pages, the guide is well indexed and includes weekly updates on tax news and changes. The item is located in the Business & Finance section of the library. Call # R336.2Com B/F.
Federal Tax Guide Reports A weekly periodical from the IRS which covers changes in tax practice as well as in the IRS and its procedures. This is located on the Business Index Table.

New York State Department of Taxation and Finance Home Page: http://www.tax.ny.gov/. This site offers links to forms and instructions online as well as information about filing electronically, answers to frequently asked questions, income tax refund status, and much more. The Tax Department has improved and expanded its Online Services. Now you can:

  • File a personal income tax extension
  • View estimated taxes
  • View and pay tax bills
  • Web file and pay metropolitan commuter transportation mobility tax (MCTMT)

  • View a customized summary of your tax account
  • Respond to department notices online

To sign up for email alerts:

  • Log in to your Online Services account
  • Select Manage email from “Account Preferences” at the top of the page

SmartMoney’s Tax Site: http://www.smartmoney.com/tax/. Links to information about capital gains and options, deductions and write-offs, home and family taxes, planning, tax traps, and IRA and retirement taxes.

TurboTax: http://turbotax.intuit.com/. An online tax filing site.
