The Summer Slide

4260380430_acf7605322_qResearch has shown when students stop reading during the summer months, they loose valuable skills that place them at a disadvantage when they begin school in the fall.  They’ve worked so hard during the year, why let them “slide” backwards?  Summer is a great opportunity to dive deeper into interests that can’t be explored during the busy school year.  It’s a time to explore new authors and genres.  It’s a time to read what you enjoy, and enjoy what you read!

The library’s Summer Reading Program has many incentives to keep students reading.  Plus, great programs to bring literacy and hands-on fun together.  The slogan for the Youth SRP is “On Your Mark…Get Set, READ!” and the slogan for the Teen SRP is “Get in the Game. READ”.

Here are a few links to get you started —

  • REGISTER for the Teen (grades 7-12) or the Youth (birth-grade 6) Summer Reading Program
  • SCHOOL SUMMER BOOKLISTS and assignments for teens and youth
  • General recommended WEBSITES about books for teens and youth

Reading Garden

pergola1We hope you’ve had the opportunity to enjoy our beautiful reading garden.  You can smell the flowers, read the many commemorative bricks along the walkway, enjoy the outdoors, or get work done.  During library business hours, you can utilize our WiFi and printing service from the garden.  This is also a perfect spot to enjoy sunsets!

bricksJuly 4th is the deadline to order your own commemorative brick.  You choose your size, wording, and logo by clicking here.  It’s a nice way to memorialize your loved ones, family, teacher, community hero, etc.  Printed brochures are also available in the library.

A special “THANK YOU” to Boy Scout Troop 77 for building the new pergola — it’s a great addition to this space!
